Quartetfest (San Francisco)
Jun 23 @ 10:30 am – 8:00 pm

Del Sol’s unique QuartetFest program is a nationally regarded model for coaching of young string players in chamber music performance. As one of the Bay Area’s premier training workshops offered to serious young musicians, QuartetFest has served hundreds of students, ages 8-18, in the last two decades. The program trains young musicians in the art of the string quartet in an encouraging and energetic environment, and guides them on a creative journey of musical discovery and fun!

This five-day summer workshop is a superb opportunity for intensive rehearsals, coachings, masterclasses (with focus on various dimensions of music making) and performances (both of students and of Del Sol).  Students will also engage in composer projects, learn relevant music theory and history, explore the physics of sound, and create a sound collage from samples they collect throughout the week.

The Del Sol Quartet will perform music of Mason Bates, the composer of this July’s greatly anticipated Santa Fe Opera premiere, “The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs.”

Recently named the most-performed composer of his generation, Mason Bates serves as the first composer-in-residence of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. His music enlivens imaginative narrative forms with novel orchestral writing, the harmonies of jazz and the rhythms of techno, and it has been the first symphonic music to receive widespread acceptance for its unique integration of electronic sounds.  As both a DJ and a curator, he has become a visible advocate for bringing new music to new spaces, whether through institutional partnerships such as his residency with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, or through his club/classical project Mercury Soul, which transforms spaces ranging from commercial clubs to Frank Gehry-designed concert halls into exciting, hybrid musical events drawing large crowds. In awarding Bates the Heinz Medal, Teresa Heinz remarked that “his music has moved the orchestra into the digital age and dissolved the boundaries of classical music.”

Tickets are available in advance online at the Chatter Box Office page at http://www.chatterabq.org/boxoffice, and if still available, at the door.

Doors open at 9:30 am.  Come early to enjoy the coffee and camaraderie.
