The Del Sol String Quartet announces the departure of their longtime violinist, Kate Stenberg, after two decades of service. She performed with the group as first violinist for many years, playing concerts at major venues across the US and abroad, as well as on the numerous CDs that Del Sol recorded. During that period Stenberg contributed to Del Sol’s growth and success, including its evolution to focus on contemporary music.
Del Sol’s mission is to bring contemporary chamber music to the public through the commissioning of new works, concerts, educational programs and recordings. Keenly involved in this mission, Stenberg helped introduce the Quartet to a broad base of modern composers from around the world, many of whom have written pieces specifically for Del Sol. She also participated in creating Del Sol’s educational programs over the years, serving universities, conservatories and grade schools across the country. She was instrumental in creating the group’s acclaimed coaching program for young string players, QuartetFest.
Del Sol founder and violist, Charlton Lee, said “Kate has been deeply involved in the Quartet’s development over the years and helped shape its vision and artistry during her tenure. Her passion for new music has helped guide our choice of repertoire and influenced our style. We are grateful for her many years of service and wish her the very best in her future endeavors.”
“It has been my pleasure working with Del Sol creating and premiering new work,” Stenberg said. “I feel grateful knowing that our work together with a wide variety of living composers, such as Ronald Bruce Smith, Per Nørgård, Chinary Ung, Amy X Neuburg, Daniel Bernard Roumain and Kui Dong, has helped expand the range of possibilities for newly-emerging quartets playing contemporary music.”
Kate Stenberg, a founding member of several contemporary music groups, including the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble and Real Vocal String Quartet, also has performed as a soloist both nationally and internationally. In addition to her Del Sol String Quartet recordings, in 2012 she recorded for the Other Minds label a solo/duo CD, “Scenes from a New Music Séance” (with pianist Eva-Maria Zimmermann), containing several world premiere recordings of works composed for her by Ronald Bruce Smith, Charles Amirkhanian and Amy X Neuburg.
